Sunday Night would be the one time that a Chargers snuggie would not be such a bad idea. Unfortunately, FAITHFUL READER, they are no longer making them. A responsible person would say that there is no way they would watch a game that kicks off at 11:30 PM on a weeknight. Fortunately for you, I am not a responsible person. Actually, the person who deserves the most credit for not preventing me from staying up (and undoubtedly calling in sick the following morning) is my wife. I think she accepts that I am not able to record the game and watch it after the fact. I certainly couldn't do that against the Raiders. I remember my parents forcing me to turn off a Monday Nighter against them when I was a kid. I believe it was the 1984 game we lost. I ended up listening to the second half in my room on the radio. Like so many of you, I hate the Raiders so much that it's frightening. When they are really bad, I think I wish they would get just a little better to JUSTIFY my hating them even more.
Of course, it would be even more frustrating to stay up until 2:30AM and have them lose, but that's just a chance we have to take. It's also something that the Bolts cannot let happen. As well as Rivers has been playing, I can't ever allow myself to feel comfortable during a game. That goes double for night games. The game at New Orleans, the Monday Nighter against Denver last year and the season opener are three times I had to go to sleep angry recently.
McCoy may seem soft spoken when he's spouting his cliches but he's instilled some fight in this team. Even though I read somewhere that he's friends with Dennis Allen, I only care about the end results. This team lost two games already that would have been extended losing streaks under Norv. I won't even hold Keenan Allen's picture with the Oakland hat against him if he plays like he did last week and we win. That sideline grab was pretty impressive and reminiscent of a catch Floyd made earlier in the year.
I was disappointed to hear that Malcom would miss the season, but I can't say I was surprised. The team did make it seem like he might be returning in a matter of weeks, but apparently there was more spinal damage than they originally thought. This was why the Chargers let him test the waters of free agency a couple of summers ago. It was the same reason they left Alexander similarly exposed. Both players vow to come back strong next season, but that doesn't have shit to do with what is going on now.
It also sucks about Freeney, but no one was shocked about that either. Last week, Liuget and Reyes showed up but I wonder how much of that was due to the attention given to Freeney. I throw up in my mouth a little every time I read an ESPN piece that Larry English will need to step up. If you noticed, he actually let a punt bounce upfield in Dallas' favor on Sunday.
As I Tweeted before the game, it was bad news that we had three starters on the offensive line out.. However, the good news was that those three wouldn't be a starter on any other team. I guess Clary will back this week, but hopefully he won't fuck things up. Rivers was awesome last Sunday and I didn't even blame him for the pick 6. He seemed to start his throw before he got hit. The short passing game that McCoy has employed has really cut down on Rivers' mistakes. He also seems to be driving his with legs as he throws and isn't making the horrible passes we've become used to over the past two seasons. My only complaint about the offense is still that they don't even try to run once they get to the ten-yard line. The reliance on the draw seems to cut down on the losses in the backfield. But they wouldn't have needed that pick by Allen in Tennessee if they had let someone try to punch it in. I certainly understand not trusting Mathews down there, but they are eventually going to have to be able to run near the end zone.
Woodhead has obviously been amazing. After seeing Sproles (only for a minute and then I couldn't bear it) do his thing on Monday and then seeing the NFL Network "Game of the Week" reply of our game I felt confident that we are OK.
With Denver looking like the '07 Pats and the Queefs off to a 4-0 start, can the Chargers actually do anything this season? Cox actually played well on Sunday and Crezdon Butler redeemed himself with the forced fumble. But we don't have the talent to really make something of ourselves this year, do we?
I'm going to try to defy my usual nature and enjoy what this team is and not what it isn't. I still hold out hope for a 9-7 record and a Wild Card berth. If that isn't good enough to get in, I'll pin my hopes on a 10-6 record. Even though he was in the booth for the game at Tennessee I hope Dan Fouts brings us good mojo on Sunday night. I heard that he's doing the game for NFL Network. That's all for now. Feel free to Tweet, Facebook, e-mail or text me during the game. It's going to be lonely after midnight and I could use the company.
Fuck the Raiders.
I didn't upload any tunes this week, but I'm becoming partial to this 1981 show.
Thanks, Daniel. I read the UT piece (without paying for it) after reading this. I can't accept rebuilding simply because why would I tune in each week if I thought that? Today I will post JIC since I have a rare free Sunday.
We support you in anything you do Ross.
I just read Acee's story about the Spanos'. Isn't it funny how hated they are in San Diego. I was just thinking the other day about how pissed off Chargers fans are. I mean, do we really think they are a good team? If we expected them to be a playoff-caliber team (which history shows us they aren't) then we would be justified in their poor start to this season. Maybe they are legitimately a bad team going through a rebuilding phase now.
That might be something for me to consider, Daniel. I saw your Tweet to Canepa about our inability to run. I couldn't agree more. Mathews could really use to show up on Monday.
After the bye week, I will give it a go
New Jimi release next month
Ross, is there anyway to get your podcasts going again? I miss them and they were always a bright spot during some tough times.
!!!!! SPOILER ALERT !!!!! !!!!! SPOILER ALERT !!!!! !!!!! SPOILER ALERT !!!!!
Dear Chargers. Thanks for ruining my Christmas.
I dont like the Guy signing because their big plan this week is to mine intel on the opposition? Is that how they think games are won in the NFL?!
Daniel, you are right that our inability to run puts too much on Rivers. That was what the chuck and suck of Norv 2011 and 2012 revealed.
It would be one thing if I thought Oakland was going to be good this year. They won't, however games like that make me wonder if we will any time soon.
Not sure who to blame for this mess. I guess Smith deserves quite a bit of the blame for what he left us with. Mathews is definitely his blunder. He looks like a running back until you hand him the ball. The defense is all Smiths fault also. I think Telesco can fix this with some time but I realize we are all sick of waiting. Not even sure how much to blame McCoy. The team has had some good game plans but losing leads has something to do with the coaching. Last night however was the worst effort yet. Getting beat like that on Oaklands first play from scrimmage made the bolts look like smacked asses. They got swallowed up by the hole.
Ross, you might want to brake out the bad early. Death and mayhem always works for me.
One thing I will say in defense of the new coach is that division games are tough. Teams often acquire personnel just to better match up with their rivals. However, it was plain stupid they could not control Pryor. They had been through this with Vick but played much better.
Their run game is wickedly bad and is a true detriment to this team. Their defense seems to suck just as bad. They have very few playmakers on D. They cannot even stop the run. Teams regularly face 2nd and 5 after running on first down. That's unacceptable.
I think their only chance is to do what they did in Philly: go no-huddle, control the clock, throw the ball 75% of the time. Maybe they should just cut their losses on Matthews already. Seeing him and English on this team makes me sick.
I could see them beating Indy an losing to Jacksonville which would make them the same old bolts which exactly what this year was gonna erase
There are so many things to be angry about. Before the game, I read a tweet from hacksaw Hamilton who has become quite the buffoon . But it said that under Norv they would underwhelm in these spots . He didn't think McCoy would let it happen. Neither did I. I don't know if they took oAkland lightly . When you've sucked for so long I don't know how you would take anyone lightly. Mathews is done in sd. They can't cover or get heat on a qb until they are scores down. Mccoys decision to accept the penalty is as dubious as the third and nine run right now.
The whole team sucked. McCoy did not do a good job preparing his team for this game. It was over 12 hours before it began.
This was just the worst fucking game to sit through.
IMO, the two biggest flaws in this team are that it cant run the ball nor can it stop the run.
That is a recipe for a losing record. Their d-line has been a huge disappointment.
And Eddie Royal can go to hell.
Preseason continues for the Denver Broncos as they prepare for the playoffs. Preseason continues for the San Diego Chargers as they prepare for the 2014 season.
All that matters is that we win. The rest should take care of itself. My wife wants us to start Breaking Bad after the football season
We have been reduced to Monday Morning Football and watching a TNF 12 hour ticker. Also, apparently the game is all about Oak QB. Still no respect for Rivers.
@Osaka17 This is not a shot a people who support the team but don't live in SD. You can't appreciate the relationship between the hometown fans and the team unless you live here, which I do. I can't believe people still don't get the animosity of the fans towards the team. Mostly all they've done is just piss everybody off by continually ripping their hearts out. I'm telling you if they had just won one goddamn Super Bowl there would already be a new stadium and we wouldn't be talking about this. I'm not gonna get into the whole stadium issue, I'm just gonna limit my post to the fans and the team. The fans are just mentally beaten down here. No team has disappointed it's fans like the Chargers. Many have just given up and understandably so. The prices are high and aren't coming down, the team sucks and has for most of its existence, and the present seems no different than the past. It's very gloomy here.
@Osaka17 Yes you do.
